Rockfort - Land Mark of Trichy

A massive 83m high rock, which is the only outcrop in the otherwise flat land of the Cauvery plain, is situated on the south bank of River Cauvery. The most amazing fact about the rock is that it is one of the oldest in the world, approximately 3800 million years old, which makes it as the rocks of Green land and Older than the Himalayas. The absolute abruptness of its rise is an attention grabber itself, but actual centre of attraction is not the fort itself, of which very little remains, but the temple of the summit. Atop the rock is the most famous ‘Uchipillayar Temple' which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. 420 steps, carved out of rock, are leads to this Temple. From here one can enjoy the panoramic view of the Trichy city.

In the middle, a flight steps leads to Thayumanava Swamy Temple (Mathur Bhutheswara), where the Lingam is a projection of the rock itself. A beautiful structure on the Rocks! There are two Pallava's Cave Temples - one at the middle of the rock and another is at the bottom. Here you can find beautiful stone carved structures and sculptures of the 6th - 7th centuries.

At the foot of the rock is a tank called ‘Theppakulam' and its pavilion, where the floating festivals were celebrated. Near the Tank is the home where the Great English Governor Robert Clive lived, which is now a part of Trichy's prestigious St. Joseph's College - Hostel. Hardly anything remains of the fort's Ramparts but the Main Guard Gate is still intact near this tank. Government Museum is located near this rock fort at Rani Mangammal Hall (Town Hall) where bronze and stone sculptures are on display.

This hub about the Trichy rockfort rekindles the memories of my visit in 1972 to that place. I stayed there for a fortnight and used to climb the mountain daily. The Uchi(Top)pillayar Temple and Thayumanasamy are my favourite places. On the foothills of the mountain, around Theppakulam (Opp. Clive's Hostel), one foreteller has outlined all the coming things in my life till the age of 65. That has proved correct till now. So I cannot forget Trichi and its temple rockfort forever. My visit to Trichi is really a turning point in my life.

Hi. I belong to Tiruchirpalli where I spent my first 7 years (REC campus). I love Trichy because of this main guard gate, Rockfort temple and what not Regional Engineering College Campus.I remember the days where I used to visit Rockfort temple with my parents and used to shop at Mainguard gate. I visit once in a year Trichy during my summer vacation (school holidays). Really fantastic experience I had in my early childhood.

I used live in the township and work at the famous boilermaker BHEL in the late 70s. What lovely, happy memories I have! I urge international visitors to proceed beyond Chennai to the hinterland of Tamil Nadu to truly experience the friendliness and hospitality of the Tamils. Near Trichy is the famous Srirangam temple devoted to Vishnu and 80 miles further south is Madurai, home to the massive, historical and magnificent Meenakshi Temple, home to thousands of intricate carvings. Another 130 miles further and you reach lovely Kanyakumari, or Cape Comorin, the Cape of Good Hope of India. If you feel upto it, Trvandrum in Kerala just 50 miles away. Starting in Chennai, all these can be done conveniently, comfortably and dirt cheaply by train from Chennai: Chennai-Trichy-Madurai-Kanyakumari-Trivandrum-Kochi-back to Chennai. I would say 1 week does it all!
